I have a decade of experience producing user interface and graphic design for Web sites, primarily working with small and medium-sized companies. My areas of focus are design for social networks and using Movable Type as a content management system. Please see samples of my work below.
One of the most popular culinary web blogs, 101 Cookbooks is a recipe journal published with Movable Type. Design and customization of common blog elements give the site a unique and handcrafted feel. A version for iPhone and mobile devices was designed to maintain the site's visual style on smaller screens.
The site has been been featured in the Washington Post, the San Francisco
Chronicle and won the 2005 People's Choice Webby Award.
Author and founding editor of Wired magazine, Kevin Kelly is the publisher of popular blogs including Cool Tools, True Films and The Technium. A site based on Kevin's book of photographs from Asia, Asia Grace is an example of using Movable Type as a content management system outside of a blog context.
Each of the site's blogs are managed with a single installation of Movable Type. I translate design and feature updates into MT template code and HTML/CSS.
A movie-centric social networking site with 36 million registered users, Flixster required a UI overhaul with the goal of increasing the number of movie ratings and user referrals. The site recently passed one billion ratings.
The design had to be flexible enough to drop in many new features, including AJAX-powered user lists, forums, custom profile skins, user-created quizzes and video previews. While the site's scope and traffic expanded quickly, the design never disrupted the experience of the existing user base.
Named one of "20 best new wineries" by Food & Wine magazine, Quixote is a small, eclectic Napa Valley winery in the Stags Leap District.
The site highlights the Hundertwasser-designed winery, which was recently featured in the New York Times, with many photographs and features online ordering and print-ready PDFs for wine collectors and distributors.
Quyen Nguyen is an emerging fashion designer. The site features an online version of her lookbook and photos from a runway show at New York Fashion Week.
A magazine covering Italian culture and style, Bene magazine's site allows visitors to read articles from the magazine and subscribe online.
The site offer features and news items from the magazine and online-only content served up by Movable Type.
Since 1968 Charles Armstrong School has served students with language-based learning differences, such as dyslexia.
The site is driven by Movable Type, which allows administrators and faculty to regularly update content. They also use the system to publish meeting mintues, newsletters and classroom blogs.
The corporate site for Simpson Manufacturing presents financial data about the company, stockholder information, news and content found in the company's annual report.
This project was a 400-page catalog site using CSS-based layout for industry giant Simpson Manufacturing, whose anchors are being used in the Bay Bridge retrofit.
Named one of the "top 25 eco-lodges" by Travel + Leisure magazine, this Italian-operated resort is located off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean.
In a collaboration with the Art Kane estate, I've produced a site based
on his "Great
Day in Harlem" portrait since 1995.
Visitors can explore Kane's portrait to find musicians based on instrument
or style, read individual biographies and learn why certain
musicians decided to stand near one another. The site gets email
from children researching school papers, seniors offering stories
about meeting Count Basie in the 1930s, as well as relatives
of musicians in the photograph looking for more information
about their talented parents and grandparents.
Great Day in Harlem has been visited by
millions and featured in museum exhibits and publications such
as Communication Arts and the New York Times.
